Laura Davis has
been an artist her whole entire life. She is self taught. A published short
story writer, Laura had the fortunate opportunity to study with the esteemed
Cherokee storyteller, Ralph Salisbury, whose encouragement prompted her to
explore all avenues of artistic expression. She lives in Portland.
In the true spirit
of folkart, Laura salvages old windows to use as her canvas, often incorporating
the original hardware into the piece. The paint is applied on the back, resulting
in a wonderful luminosity. Commercial oils are used so that paintings may
be displayed outdoors. Whether portraits, landscapes, or the artist’s
favorite subject – dogs, the results are always highly colorful and
expressive. Commissioned work is accepted.
Since 1999 when Laura first began painting, her work has already become highly
collectable. After winning “People’s Choice” at her first
hanging, she was commissioned as a muralist for a public building and has
sold her work throughout the country. She
is currently working on a series of guitar paintings,
three of which were purchased by Portland State University for the Guitar
Festival program cover.
